Hola amigos!

En primer lugar me gustaría disculparme ya que la semana pasada me fue imposible actualizar el blog y es que tuve un fin de semana bastante ajetreado. De cualquier forma, os hago un resumen de los últimos 15 días y aunque no pueda explayarme mucho intentaré no dejarme ningún nada.

El fin de semana pasada tuve la visita de mis amigos de Madrid que encabezados por Javi (mi colega que vive en Londres) vinieron para ver a Vitalic en el The Warehouse Project. Para los que no sepáis que es el The Warehouse Project (o El Proyecto Almacen) es una club situado bajo la estación de tren de Piccadilly. En el año 2007 la revista musical Mixmag lo proclamo como el mejor club de toda Inglaterra. La verdad es que es para verlo, es muy urbano y tiene una ambientación que me recuerda a los garitos más undegrounds de Berlín. Para los curiosos deciros que la entrada costo 20 pounds (anticipada) y una vez dentro la consumiciones no eran excesivamente caras, 3,5 pounds la pinta de Budweiser. Debo decir que la actuación de Vitalic fue muy buena, yo nunca lo había visto en directo y me sorprendió muy gratamente especialmente cuando puso sus temas más míticos.

Como muchos ya sabréis, esta semana he estado preparado el examen del CAE. El viernes tuve el “speaking” y me puedo dar por satisfecho, aunque uno siempre tiene la sensación que podría haberlo hecho mejor, especialmente si lo temas de conversación hubiesen sido más afines. De cualquier manera, creo que esta parte la aprobare aunque espero poder sacar unos cuantos puntos extra para compensar aquellas partes que más que probablemente no apruebe (como por ejemplo el “use of english”). El próximo miércoles tengo el resto del examen (“listening”, “writing”, “reading” y “use of englinsh”) y lo cierto es que no tengo muy claro como estudiar. Es verdad que hay libros con exámenes de años anteriores aunque bajo mi parecer aún siendo una ayuda no es definitivo por que los exámenes, los temas e incluso algunas partes del examen han cambiado durante los últimos años. Si bien es cierto, esta semana no tenia pensado actualizar tampoco el blog pero he pensado que me iría bien escribir un poquito en ingles y ya de paso explicaros como me va.

Como es lógico, ahora que tenemos el examen las clases han terminado. La verdad es que las voy a echar de menos porque aunque cuando tenía que ir siempre me daba pereza, echaré de menos el día a día con los compañeros, aunque esta claro que con aquellos que tengo mayor afinidad los seguiré viendo, pero obviamente no será lo mismo. De hecho, ayer me fui a tomar unas pintas con Serge (suizo) y Kostas (griego) y hablamos de hacer una cena+fiesta después del examen aunque tenemos que decidir cuando, porque hay gente que se va a casa por navidad (como un servidor). Por cierto, no recuerdo si lo había publicado o no pero estaré en España del 12 al 31. El motivo de elegir estas fechas y no otras es fundamentalmente el preció de los billetes. Espero que los controladores aéreos no me la jueguen, ya sabemos en que país vivimos y no querría presentarme en el Prat con una metralleta.

En cuanto al curro, lamentablemente la cosa todavía no arranca. La verdad es que en las últimas semanas lo he dejado un poco apartado porque tenía que centrarme en el examen aunque me llamaron para un par de entrevistas, así que me tuve que ir a toda prisa a Primark a comprarme un traje. Aunque fui a la primera entrevista sabiendo que olía raro, me lo tome como un ejercicio de entrenamiento. Lo más destacado que puedo decir es que más o menos me defendí bien, especialmente con el tipo que me entrevisto que parecía que se había tragado una metralleta. La entrevista duro no más de 20 minutos y me dijeron que al final del día me llamarían si me seleccionaban para un “Open Day” (trabajar 8 horas de gratis) al día siguiente. Aún habiendo tenido una actuación discreta en la entrevista (eso no quiere decir mal) me llamaron para el “Open Day”, pero en vista de que la empresa era de Jack Sparrow decidí que fuese su tía la del pueblo a trabajar por la patilla. Después de consultar varias fuentes estoy prácticamente seguro que era un timo!

La verdad es que la situación se esta poniendo fea especialmente si no encuentro un trabajo (de lo que sea) en breve y me daría mucha rabia tenerme que volver ahora. Eso no quiere decir que no eche de menos a mi familia, amigos y ciudad, pero lo cierto es que si soy sincero me ha costado lo suyo encontrar mi sitio en esta ciudad y ahora que ya lo he hecho me gustaría seguir en el. Como positivo puedo decir que uno de los frentes abiertos que tengo abiertos, me han seleccionado para unas pruebas online y en función de los resultados me invitaran (o no) a unas pruebas presenciales.

Bueno amigos, me gustaría explicaros muchas mas cosas y con mucho más detalle, pero debo volver a estudiar porque tengo pocos días hasta el examen y quiero darlo todo. De cualquier forma en 7 días estoy de vuelta así que pronto os podré contar de viva voz mis batallitas.

ENGLISH VERSION

Hi there!

Firstly, I’d like to apologise for not updating the blog last weekend but it was completely impossible because I had a really busy weekend. Anyway, I’m gonna try to write a good summary of the last fifteen days and although I can’t spend too much time on the blog I’ll try to not miss anything.

Last weekend my friends from Madrid (Javi, Carlos and Alejandro) came to Manchester for Vitalic’s concert at the Warehouse Project. For those who don’t know The Warehouse Project I’ll tell you that it’s a club in a car park located under the Piccadilly Station. In 2007, The Warehouse Project was voted by dance music magazine Mixmag as the Best Club in the UK. The truth is that it is a place to go to, it’s a really underground club and had an atmosphere that reminds me a lot of the most underground clubs in Berlin. For the curious mind, I can tell you that the ticket was 20 pounds (in advance) and the drinks weren’t especially expensive, 3,5 pounds for a pint of Budweiser. I must say that Vitalic’s performance was awesome. I have ever seen one of his performances live and I was pleasantly surprised, particularly when he played his most mythical themes.

As most of you know, this week I have been studying for the CAE exam. Last Friday I had the speaking test and I can be satisfied, although one has always the feeling that one could have done much better if the topics had been easier. Anyhow, I think I’ll pass this part even though I expected to get some extra points in this part in order to compensate the parts with a low punctuation, for example, as I’m sure it will be the grammar part. Next Wednesday I have the exam of the other parts (writing, speaking, listening and use of English) and the truth is that I’m not sure how to study. There are a lot of books with exams of other years although from my point of view even having a good help is not the key, because the exams, the topics and even some parts of the exam have changed. It’s true that this weekend I though to not update this blog either, but I have thought that it would be useful if I write a bit in English and explain how things are going with me.

As is logical, now I have the exam the classes are over. The truth is that I’m gonna miss the classes because although when I had to go to class and I didn’t fancy it, I’ll miss the interaction with my classmates, even though obviously I’ll keep in touch with all of them, but it’s not gonna be the same. Actually, yesterday I went out for a drink with Serge (the Swiss) and Kostas (the Greek) and we talked about organizing a dinner and party after the English exam, but we still have to decide when and where, because most of us are gonna go back home for Christmas. By the way, I don’t know if I told you that I’m going to be back in Spain from 12th to 31st. The reason for choosing those dates was basically the prices. I hope to not have problems with the Spanish air controllers because I don’t want to go to the Airport with my rifle.

About the job, unfortunately it’s still not working. The truth is that last weeks I have put it aside a little bit, because I have had to focus on the exam, although I was selected for an interview in a Marketing Agency, so I had to go to Primark to get a suit. Even though I went to the interview knowing that it was a scam, I took it as practice. The most important thing I can say about that is that I had a more or less good performance especially with the interviewer who looked as if he had swallowed a gun. The interview lasted around 20 minutes and they told me that they will call me back to communicate to me if I have been selected for an Open Day the next day. Of course, they did even though I am sure I wasn’t that brilliant than the other candidates but finally I refused to go because it was clear that they only want me to work for free.

To be honest, the situation is turning really bad especially if I don’t find a job (anything) in the next weeks/month and I’ll be completely pissed off if I had to come back to Spain now. By this I don’t mean that I don’t miss my family, friends or city, but the truth is if I’m honest that it’s not been easy to find my place in this city and now I’ve got it I’d like to keep it. As a positive, I can say that I have been selected for an online assessment in one of the companies I have applied for. If my results are good, I’ll be invited for a presential test.

Well my friends, I’d like to tell you many other things and in more detail but I must go back to study because I have not got much time to prepare for it. Anyway, I’ll catch up with you in seven days.

De vuelta / I'm back

Hola gente!!!

Ya estoy de vuelta para actualizar el blog después de una semana de descanso. Y es que la verdad la semana pasada me fue imposible, así que he preferido esperarme hasta hoy y hacer un post conjunto.

Primero quiero empezar hablándoos de mi viaje a Londres. Como muchos ya sabréis el jueves me fui a para allí después de mi clase de ingles y volví justo el día de mi cumpleaños (Lunes 15). Ya conocía Londres, pero me volví a enamorar de la ciudad aunque hubo algunas cosas que no me gustaron. El transporte es muy, muy caro (si no tienes la tarjeta Oyster) y por las noches según donde estés puedes tardar la vida en llegar a casa, el fin de semana esta todo a petar y el clima tampoco es uno de sus puntos fuertes (aunque no es muy diferente al que tenemos aquí en Manchester). Bueno, os detallo por orden cronológico que es lo que hice por esas tierras.

- El viernes era el día en que mi amigo Javi acababa su Trainee así que después de currar le pase a buscar por el trabajo y junto con sus compañeros nos fuimos al Pub a tomar unas pintas. La verdad es que fue bastante divertido, podías encontrarte gente de todos lados, desde Australia, Grecia, Ucrania a Bangladesh. Después de unas cuentas rondas, acabamos a las 2 am cenando un English Breakfast (suena raro no?) en un bar 24 horas. La vuelta a casa fue horrible, más de 1 hora en autobús…

- El sábado por fin probé el Fish & Chips británico que aunque ya lo conocía de mi viaje a Dublín no lo recordaba tan bueno!!! Después por la tarde nos fuimos al Soho y por la noche una cena como Dios manda. Nuestra intención era salir, pero viendo como se las gasta el Transport of London en fin de semana, preferimos ir para casa directamente.

- El domingo vimos la carrera de F1 (vaya decepción) y después nos fuimos para Candem que era una de las pocas cosas que me faltaba por ver de Londres. Estaba plagado de guiris (¡españoles everywhere!) pero me gusto mucho el tipo de tiendas que se veían por ahí. Luego fuimos a ver el futbol y para casa.

- El lunes ya no hubo tiempo para más. Javi se fue temprano a trabajar y yo a la estación de Euston, y cuando llegue a casa me encontré la agradable sorpresa de que mis compis de piso me habían preparado un Welcome Home & Happy Birthday. Me decoraron la habitación con globos, me compraron un pastel y encima me regalaron las tres primeras temporadas de The IT Crowd y una foto en la que salíamos los tres juntos! Que más puedo pedir!!!

En resumen puedo decir que me lo pase muy bien, fue un viaje muy tranquilo y relajado como esperaba, nada de ir con la cámara colgada del cuello y pateando la ciudad, me gusto mucho Londres aunque hubo cosas que no me gustaron tanto (como ya he comentado antes) y espero pasar por allí mucho más tiempo en el futuro.

Esta semana ya de vuelta en Machester he aprovechado para conocer un par de sitios nuevos El jueves, me fui con Serge (un compañero de clase suizo) y Kostas (también compañero de clase, griego) a Charlton, un barrio a unos 10 minutos en bus. Allí nos encontramos con unos amigos de Serge y nos fuimos al Pub a socializarnos un poco. Al ser jueves nos retiramos pronto, no es cuestión de que se nos vaya de las manos entre semana. Ayer Sábado Kostas y yo nos fuimos para Sale, donde nos encontramos a Serge, a Alicja (compañera de clase polaca) y unos amigos de ella. Después de inventarme mi nacionalidad más de 20 veces (ayer fui chino, ingles, australiano, polaco, español,…) estuvimos tomando algo tranquilamente. La verdad es que no vi absolutamente nada del barrio porque el Pub al que fuimos estaba al lado de la estación así que no puedo opinar mucho, aunque si es cierto que me han dado buenas referencias del lugar. Después el Griego y yo nos fuimos mano a mano a un garito del centro a ver que se cocía. No estuvo mal, la música me gusto bastante aunque no había mucha gente y nos retiramos pronto.

Cambiando de tema a algo un poco más serio, esta semana he aprovechado para poner un poco de orden con el tema de los curriculums y cartas de motivación. He creado un Excel con los nombres de las empresas a las que he aplicado, fecha, nombre del programa y respuesta. Aproximadamente aun tengo unos 30 frentes abiertos, de los cuales creo que tengo posibilidades reales en unas 10. El problema es que este tipo de procesos son lentos y no se aclara de un día para otro, pueden llegar a tardar meses. De momento no he tenido noticias de nadie ni de nada, aunque esta semana espero alguna cosita.

En cuanto al examen de ingles ya tengo fechas confirmadas. El día 3 de Diciembre tengo el Speaking y también esta confirmanda mi pareja, Serge. Me ha propuesto irnos a tomar una pinta antes del examen aunque no lo veo claro… El día 8 de Diciembre tengo el Reading, Listening, Writing y Use of English. A dos semanas del examen todavía creo que tengo serías opciones, el problema fundamentalmente estará en el Use of English que aunque presuntamente es la parte de gramática, no lo es completamente. Como su nombre indica es el Uso de ingles, así que aun sabiéndose la gramática de “pe a pa” necesitas soltura para modificar frases y mantener su significado, mucho vocabulario, etc… Estos 15 días que quedan voy a hacer un esfuerzo para aumentar mi nivel al máximo posible y aunque no apruebe esta parte intentar compensarla con las demás. Deseadme suerte!!

Bueno, voy a ir cerrando la persiana que son las 2 pm y sigo sin comer. Creo que con el post de esta semana os podéis hacer una buena idea de cómo me ha ido estos últimos días. Por cierto, la semana que viene subiré las estadísticas del blog (visitas, países, etc..) que me han parecido bastante curiosas.

Hi people!!!

I’m back to update the blog alter one week off. The truth is that last week was completely impossible, so I have preferred to wait till today and write just one post of both weeks.

Firstly I want to start by telling you how my travel to London was. As most of you know, Thursday after going to my English class I went to London and I came back on my birthday (Monday 15th). Although I have been in London before, I fell in love with the city again, but there were some things that I didn’t like them. The transport is fucking expensive (if you don’t have the Oyster card) and at nights and depends on where you are, you can spend too much to get home, on weekends everything is crowded and the weather is not one of the strongest facts of the city neither (although it’s not really different of the weather here in Manchester). Well, I give you some chronological details of what I did during those days:

- On Friday my friend Javi finished his Trainee at his new company, so after working I picked him up and we went to the pub to drink a few pints with some of his workmates. The truth was that it was quite good funny, you could find people from everywhere, from Australia to Bangladesh. After a few rounds, we finished the night in a 24-hour bar eating an English breakfast (sounds weird, doesn’t it?) at 2am. Then the coming back home was horrible, more than one hour by bus…

- On Saturday, finally I ate a British “Fish & Chips” that even though I knew it from my visit to Dublin in 2006, I didn’t remember it that good. That afternoon we went to Soho and at night we went to a posh restaurant in town. Our intention was to go out, but according to last night’s experience with Transport of London, we went home by tube.

- On Sunday we watched the F1 race (what a deception) and after that we went to Candem, which was one the places I didn’t visit when I went to London last year. It was funny because it was crowded of tourists (especially spaniards) but I have to reckon that I really like the kind of small shops you can find in this market. Then, we went to watch the football match.

- On Monday, we didn’t have time ton anything else. Javi went to work early and I went to Euston Station to take my train. When I get home (that also sounds weird) I found that my housemates had prepared a “Welcome Back & Happy Birthday”. They decorated my room with balloons, bought my favourite cake and give me some present (the first three seasons of The IT Crowd and one of the pictures we have all together). It’s was fantastic, what else I can ask for!!!

To summarize I can say that I really had a great time in London, it was a quite and relaxed as I expected, I liked London as usually even though there were some things that I didn’t like it (as I said before) and I hope to spend much more time in this city in the future.

This weekend in Manchester I tried to know some new places. On Thursday after class I went to Charlton, which is a small area ten minutes far away by bus from town with Serge (a classmate from Switzerland) and Kostas (also classmate but from Greece). There we went to the Pub where we met up with some friend of Serge, but being a Thursday we decided to come back to town early. Yesterday, Kostas and me went to Sale to meet Serge, Alicjia (classmate from Poland) and some others friends. After changing my nationality more than 20 times (yesterday I was Chinese, British, Australian, Polish, Spanish,…) we were drinking something. The truth is that I didn’t see anything of Sale but they told me that it’s a nice place to live. After the adventure in Sale, the Greek guy and me went to clubbing in town. It wasn’t bad, actually the music was quite good but the club was empty and we decided to go home early.
Changing the topic, this week I have tried to arrange all the applications and cover letters I have sent during the last 3 months. I have created and Excel sheet with all the names, dates, programs and replies. Apparently, I still have more than 30 applications in process and I think I have strong possibilities in more or less 10. At the moment I have nothing, but I wait some replies for next week.

About the English exam I have already confirmed the dates. On the third of December I have the speaking test and my partner will be Serge. He proposed me to go to drink a pint before the exam but to be honest I am not really sure about this plan… On the 8th I have the Reading, Listening, Writing and Use of English test. I still have two weeks to study and I feel optimistic. The problem is basically the Use of English that in my opinion is the most difficult part. I’m going to try to improve my level in this part. Wish me luck!

Well, I’m going to close this post because it’s 2 pm and I feel hungry. By the way, next week I’m going to upload the blog’s statics because they are pretty interesting.

Una semana más / One more week

VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

Hola amigos!

Vuelvo con pocas novedades así que espero que esta semana no me quede un tochaco como últimamente (normal que este perdiendo lectores) aunque como siempre espero que sea un resumen divertido.

Ayer estuve en Primark ya que desde que llegue a Manchester he ido un poco justo de ropa, gracias a la política de Ryanair con las maletas. Así que el sábado me levante bien temprano por la mañana y después de una duchita y un buen desayuno me lance al centro. El día acompañaba bastante, por fin ha parado de llover (después de 5 días de locura) y se dejaba entrever el “sol”. Primero me deje caer por una tienda que tiene muy buenos precios pero no encontré nada interesante. Además teniendo en cuenta lo indeciso que soy cuando voy a comprar ropa, me largue sin comprar nada (bien hecho!). Así que me dirigí a Primark a ver que encontraba aunque no esperaba mucho… INCORRECTO!!! Nunca subestimes el poder de Primark. La verdad es que tuve una premonición porque solo entrar pensé en pillar un buen cesto. Empecé a meter de todo: jerseys, camisetas, zapatos, cinturones, etc… y me plante en el probador. Comprobé que todo me quedaba “mas o menos bien” y después de hacer un par de descartes me fui a pagar. Por un momento creí que no llevaba dinero suficiente pero cuando me dijeron “73 pounds, please” me salio una sonrisita de victoria (nunca me había ido de una tienda tan satisfecho con una compra).

Hoy he estado por Oxford Road y he dado una vuelta por el Museo de Manchester donde hacían una exposición sobre cultura china. Después de un vistazo rápido a la planta principal, me he ido a ver dinosaurios y animalitos vivos, que eso si que me parecía interesante (con todos mis respetos a la cultura China si es que tengo algún lector de por allí. De todos modos esta parte la omitiré en la versión en ingles xD). Después para casa que hoy toca jornada deportiva: F1 y derbi madrileño.

En cuanto al trabajo no puedo contaros muchos, creo que la mejor definición sería: “Estamos trabajando en ello...” como diría nuestro querido expresidente. Hay alguna cosa por ahí, aunque tengo que trabajármelo un poquillo.

Finalmente deciros que el próximo jueves me voy rumbo a Londres. Estaré allí, visitando a mi colega Javi durante cuatro días. La verdad es que tengo muchas ganas de ir, un cambios de aires siempre sienta bien aunque sinceramente cada día soy más mancunian! El tema es que no sé exactamente cuando podré actualizar el blog pero prometo contaros todo lo acontecido. La verdad es que promete mucho…

Esto es todo lo que quería contaros. Espero traeros pronto novedades de cuando vuelvo a la tierra de los toros (no en Cataluña), el flamenco y el sol.

ENGLISH VERSION

Hi mates,

I’m back with last news, even there is not much to explain. I hope this new post won’t be as much long as the last one and although I can’t promise anything, I’ll try to do in a funny way.

Yesterday I went to Primark because since I came here I feel I missed a lot of my favourites clothes in Spain, thanks to Ryanair policy about luggage. So on Saturday I woke up early in the morning and after a quick shower and a strong breakfast I decided to go to town. The day was really nice, finally the rain has stopped (after 5 days) and I even could see some sun’s rays. Firstly, I went to this shop where you find great deals with clothes from other seasons, but I didn’t find anything interesting, at least for me. So I left the shop without buying anything (well done!!) and I went to Primark although I didn’t have really expectations… WRONG!! Never underestimate the power of Primark. The truth is that when I was coming in I had a premonition because I got the biggest basket I found. I started putting everything I watched in the basket like if I was possessed: pullovers, shirts, belts, shoes, etc… I went to the fitting room. I checked that everything fitted me right (more or less) and after withdrawing some clothes, I paid. For one moment I thought I didn’t have money enough to pay for everything, but when the shop assistant said: “73 pounds, please” I smiled with a kind of victory face (I have never left any shop as much satisfied as I did yesterday).

Today, I have been in Oxford Road and I have gone to the Manchester Museum where I have seen an exposition about Chinese Culture. After a quick look to the ground floor, I went to look other things, such as dinosaurs and animals. Then I went home to start the sport day: F1 and Madrid derby.

About the job I can’t tell you many things, I think the best definition would be: “We are working on it…” as our appreciate expresident would say. There is something around, but I still have to work hard.

Finally I would like to tell you that next Thursday I’m going to London. I’ll be there, visting my friend Javi during four days. The truth is I really fancy going there. The point is I’m not sure when I could update the blog but I’ll promise I’ll tell you everything.

Halloween

VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

Hola amigos!!

El lunes pasado me fui a cortar el pelo (por cierto, que frío hacía) y vistos los precios de las peluquerías del centro, me acerque a la Curry Mile a ver que ofrecían. Tengo que reconocer que la experiencia fue positiva, conservo las dos orejas y conseguí esquivar el look islámico. No puede establecer mucha conversación con el peluquero ya que el tipo no dominaba demasiado la lengua de Shakespeare así que la cosa fue aburrida.

Después de mi aventura en la peluquería, me fui a Lidl a comprar víveres para el resto de semana y luego de vuelta a casa. Por la tarde fui con Anna y una amiga suya a ver The Social Network. Era la primera vez que iba al cine en Manchester y os puedo asegurar que los precios son igual de terroríficos que en España (6,50 pounds). La película esta bien, a mi por lo menos me gusto aunque lo menos importante de la trama es Facebook. Quizás lo más importante sea la relación entre los diferentes personajes, en cualquier cosa, os la recomiendo.



En cuanto al curso de ingles, todo marcha viento en popa. Por fin nos hemos socializado como grupo y hemos ido al pub de enfrente a beber unas pintas. Son gente muy divertida y solemos hablar de cualquier cosa. Esto de ir al pub se esta convirtiendo en una buena costumbre, porque a parte de practicar ingles un ambiente más relajado me permite conocer a gente. Por cierto, uno de mis compañeros (el griego) es casi vecino mío, así que la mayoría de días nos volvemos juntos.

Por fin me han traído mi nueva cama. La anterior estaba totalmente destrozada, el somier se sujetaba por varias columnas de tochos y el colchón era perfecto para el entrenamiento de un fakir. El proceso para cambiarlo fue realmente fácil, primero Kati contacto con la agencia de alquiler, me llamaron para concretar el día (miércoles.) y el día X a la hora Y, se presento un polaco con cara de pocos amigos a montarme el lío. Por cierto, el tipo me dijo: “Si quieres que te monte la cama, ya puedes desmontar la vieja” y yo me limite ha hacer lo debe hacerse en estos casos, el tonto. Miraba los tornillos como si fuesen aliens y el tipo decidió hacerlo pos su cuenta. Luego el amigo me quería cobrar 15 pounds por llevarse la cama vieja, aunque le dije que no se preocupase que ya me encargaba yo.

Este viernes estuve en Withington dando una vuelta en las tiendas de segunda mando. Me compre la primera temporada de Little Britain aunque todavía no he visto ningún capítulo. El viernes y el sábado estuvimos viendo capítulos de Spaced y The IT Crowd. El principio fue un poco duro porque el humor ingles es diferente, muy diferente al español pero luego le empecé a pillar el punto. Me pregunto si me estoy convirtiendo en un friki. Supongo que quien haya vistos estas series entenderá por que lo digo.

Finalmente os quiero contar que para celebrar Halloween compramos un par de calabazas y las tuneamos al más puro estilo yankee. Siendo realistas, la mía quedo un poco chunga pero vaya por se la primera se entiende. Adjunto pruebas gráficas.

Hi friends!!

Last Monday I went to cut my hair (by the way, the weather was so cold!) and once seen the prices in town, I decided to go to Rusholme to see what it offered. I have to recognise that the experience was great, I still have both ears and I didn’t get an Islamic look cut. I couldn’t speak a lot with the hairdresser because he didn’t speak the Shakespeare’s language properly, so it was quite boring.

After my adventure at the hairdresser, I went to Lidl to buy some food for the rest of the week and then I went back home. At the afternoon, I went with Anna’s friend and Anna to watch the film The Social Network. It was the first time I went to the cinema in Manchester and I can assure that the ticket was more expensive than in Spain (6,50 pounds). The film was good and I really liked it, although the less important part of the plot is the idea of Facebook. Perhaps, the most important thing is the relationship between the characters. Anyway, if you haven’t watched the movie, I recommend you to go.

Examen del CAE / CAE Exam

Hola amigos!

Parece que a llegado el frío verdad?? Aquí ya hace unos días que hace biruji aunque todavía se puede aguantar, aunque me temo que el invierno aun esta por llegar!!

Por fin me he matriculado para el examen del CAE. Han sido 95 libras que duelen un poco pero pensando en el precio de España… El examen es el día 8 de Diciembre aunque todavía tienen que confirmarme la fecha para el “speaking”. De momento sigo creyendo que hay posibilidades aunque hay que trabajar duro el tiempo que queda, que no es mucho la verdad. De momento las notas que me están dando son buenas. Este fin de semana tengo que preparar un “Report” y hacer un test de “Use of English”. Probablemente lo haga mañana y aprovecharé para simular condiciones normales de examen (tiempo, lugar, condiciones, etc.) Teóricamente esta es la parte que llevo más floja así que en el test de mañana un 50% de aciertos sería aceptable (para aprobar es necesario un 60% global de aciertos).

En cuanto a la semana hay pocas novedades aunque si es verdad que me han dado una buena noticia. Esta semana nos han comunicado que nuestro proyecto del MBA ha sido reconocido como el mejor proyecto de la 13ª Edición. Aunque el reconocimiento no lleve asociado ningún tipo de gratificación económica, se agradece que se reconozca nuestro trabajo, sobretodo cuando nos hemos dejado la piel y el nivel del resto de participantes ha sido tan alto. La entrega del premio se realizará el día 27 de Octubre en el CTTI. He mirado la posibilidad de viajar a España pero se sale del presupuesto y finalmente serán mis compañeros quienes nos representarán.

Lo único destacable desde el punto de vista social sucedió el Miércoles, y fue un evento literario donde mi compañera de piso Anna leía un fragmento de su último trabajo. Fue divertido, hubo bastantes participantes de muy alto nivel y aunque el lugar era muy cool (Corner House), con gente bebiendo vino y comentando las obras de los autores no es el tipo de evento que frecuento. Me limite a pasar desapercibido entre el personal…

Creo que lo voy a dejar aquí, no quiero comeros mucho la cabeza con cosas irrelevantes aunque antes de acabar me gustaría agradeceros vuestros mensajes y/o e-mails de apoyo incondicional.

ENGLISH VERSION

Hi mates!

It seems the cold has come, right? It’s been cold the last few days in Manchester and I’m still surviving although the winter is not here yet.

Finally I have enrolled the CAE exam. It cost 95 quid, that hurt me a bit, but then, thinking about the Spanish prices… The exam is on the 8th of December although the schedule for the Speaking Test is not confirmed. At the moment I still think I have possibilities to pass the exam but I must work hard the time remaining, which is not much. At least I can say that I had good scores in the last practices. This week I have to write a “Report” and take a “Use of English” test. Probably, I’ll write the test tomorrow and I’ll tend to simulate the real exam conditions (time, place, conditions, etc.). Theoretically, this is my weakest part so I guess that getting a 50% of right answers would be acceptable (Note: To pass the exam you need a 60% of right answers).

There isn’t much news this week, but it’s true that I had a good one. This week we have been informed that our MBA Project has been awarded “Best Project” of the 13th Edition. Even though we don’t get any kind of monetary prices, we appreciate the recognition of our work, which was hard and intense and according to the high level demonstrated for the other participants. The Award Ceremony will be on the 27th of October at CTTI. I’ve checked the possibility to travel to Spain but it’s out of my budget and in the end my uni mates will represent the team.

Under the social point of view, last Wednesday I went to a literature event where my housemate Anna read a piece of her last work. It was fun, many high level participants and a cool place where people drunk wine and commented the performances, although it’s not the kind of event I used to go to in Spain. It was a really good experience.

Well, I think I’m going to stop right here. I just want to thank everyone who has sent me messages and e-mails with positives wishes.

Hola a todos!

Hoy quiero empezar hablándoos del giro que estoy intentando dar a mi estrategia de búsqueda de empleo en Inglaterra. Desde hace ya unas semanas me estoy dando cuenta de lo difícil que es entrar en un programa para graduados de una gran multinacional. Mi curriculum es bueno, mejor dicho, mi curriculum es atractivo, el problema es que el mundo es muy grande y es fácil encontrar a alguien mejor que tu. Esta semana me lleve la desagradable sorpresa de que no iba a continuar el proceso de selección para una empresa que requería un joven graduado con castellano y catalán fluido como principales habilidades. Parece un chiste eh? Pues no, no lo es… debe ser que han encontrado un tí@ que lo habla mejor que yo, xD De cualquier forma, la nueva estrategia es básicamente enviar mi curriculum a empresas con un perfil similar a la que trabaje los últimos tres años en España. Quiero probar a ver si en estas es también difícil tener una entrevista. Eso no significa que tire la toalla por las grandes multinacionales, simplemente quedan en segundo plano y solo iré a por aquellas que realmente se adapten 100% a mi perfil y crea que tengo alguna posibilidad real. La anécdota de la semana es que el viernes me llamaron de una empresa de Marketing de Manchester que había recibido mi curriculum. Hasta aquí suena todo bien, no?? Pues bien, resulto ser la empresa donde trabaja una amiga de Anna, Natacha, donde había enviado el curriculum. Por lo que me han contando el trabajo no es tan bonito como lo pintan en la oferta, así que parece que la cosa se va a quedar ahí.

Antes del día 22 de este mes (viernes) tengo que pagar la matricula para el examen del CAE, si es que finalmente decido hacerlo. Estuve hablando con mi profesora y me comento que no estaba convencida de que pudiese pasarlo, aunque también me reconoció que no tenía mucha información de mi nivel real. De todos modos, creo que voy a hacer el examen en Diciembre. Porque?? Principalmente porque no tengo nada mejor que hacer, tengo tiempo suficiente para mejor mis puntos débiles y además, el examen vale la mitad que en España, por lo que incluso suspendiendo (Dios no lo quiera) y aprobándolo a la segunda, seguiría saliéndome a buen de precio. El tema esta en que si he pagado 360 pounds para un curso de preparación de una examen al cual no me presento, es más perdida de dinero efectiva. De cualquier forma, no creo estar tan lejos de la meta y seguro que si me esfuerzo lo conseguiré. En peores plazas hemos toreado!!

Por otro lado, el miércoles pasado descubrí PRIMARK, y vaya descubrimiento. PRIMARK es una especie de ZARA pero más barato si cabe. Jersey 12 pounds, trajes 35 pounds, camisetas 8 pounds… Lógicamente me acabe una chaqueta de pseudo cuero, por lo menos en cuanto apariencia, a un precio muy razonable. La verdad es que si hubiese ido con pasta me hubiese hecho polvo, pero por suerte no la llevaba. Otra cosa curiosa que descubrí el miércoles es que me encantan los sándwich de bacón (aunque no el bacón típico español es mas bien una mezcla entre jamón york y lomo), queso fundido y salsa de arándanos. Supongo que los dos primeros ingredientes no os habrán sorprendido, pero lo de los arándanos… mmm!!! La combinación de los tres elementos es genial!!

Hi there,

Today I’d like to start by telling the turn that I’m trying to do with my job search strategy. Since a couple of weeks ago I’ve realized how difficult it is to get a position in one of those graduate programs in an international companies. My CV is good, or better said, my CV is attractive, but the real problem is that the world is huge and it’s easy to find someone better than you. This week I had the unpleasant news that I didn’t go to progress in the selection process for a company, which required a young graduate fluent in Catalan and Spanish. It seems a joke, doesn’t it? But it’s not a joke, not at all… They must have found someone else more fluent than me. Anyway, the new strategy is basically to only send my CV to those companies which have a similar profile to the one I was working in Spain the last three years. I just want to try if it’s easier to have an interview than in the international ones. That doesn’t mean I give up, but I just want to send my CV and my cover letter to those companies that I feel I have a chance with and not to waste my time anymore. The anecdote of the week is that last Friday I had a phone call from a Marketing Agency based in Manchester. Sounds good? Well, finally I find out that I sent my application to the company where Anna’s friend, Natacha, works at, and what I heard about the job is not as good as the job offer said.

Before next Friday (22th), I have to pay the CAE exam fee if I really want to do it. I was talking to my English teacher and she said that she wasn’t completely sure whether I could pass the exam or not, although she recognized that she didn’t have enough information to value my real English level. Anyway, I’ll probably do the exam in December. Why? Because I don’t have anything better to do, I have time enough to improve my weak points and moreover, the exam is half the price than the one in Spain. In spite of failing, if I won’t pass it the first time, it will still be cheaper than in Spain. The point is that if I’ve spent 360 pounds to study a preparatory course for an exam that I’m not going to take, it will be a waste of money. Anyway, I don’t think I’m far off the goal and I’m sure if I make a big effort I’ll pass it.

In addition, last Wednesday I discovered PRIMARK! And that was a good discovery! PRIMARK is a kind of ZARA but cheaper if it’s possible. Pullover 12 quid, suit 35 quid and t-shirt 8 quid… That’s crazy mate!!! Obviously, I finally bought a coat but the price was quite good! The truth is if I had brought more money, I would have spent it all, but luckily I didn’t!! Another interesting thing I found out on Wednesday was that I love bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich. If you really know me I think that the two first ingredients were easy to guess, but the cranberry…mmmm!! The combination of those three elements is simply delicious!

The spanish omelette day

Hola a todos!!

Hoy es 10 de Octubre del 2010, o lo que es lo mismo, 10/10/10… y además domingo, así que vuelvo con una nueva entrada en el blog.

Empezaré contándoos que el martes pasado estuvimos en un karaoke de Canal Street Anna, Michelle, Kati y Calum y la verdad es que nos lo pasamos muy bien. Por suerte para todo Manchester y para el tiempo, no cante… de lo contrario todavía estaría lloviendo, jajajaja Además todo el mundo que subía al escenario cantaba muy muy bien y el ridículo hubiese sido histórico.

El resto de la semana he estado bastante ocupado con el curso de ingles y es que la profesora nos manda bastantes deberes. Además me he reenganchado al libro del Chico del pijama de rayas y estoy también dándole duro al libro de gramática. En breve decidiremos quienes va al examen del CAE en Diciembre, y la verdad espero ser unos de los elegidos. De momento creo estar en la media aunque el examen en general no es sencillo y hay que estar extremadamente atento.

Ayer sábado tuve una visita sorpresa de Jordi, Néstor e Iñaki. Por lo visto han estado por el norte y se han pasado por Manchester. Me los lleve a uno de mis bares/pubs favoritos del barrio y nos bebimos unas pintas de San Miguel (donde va triunfa). Después nos pasamos por la Curry Mile para cenar (por cierto, aun estoy llorando de lo que picaba mi hamburguesa). Fue una tarde-noche muy entretenida y creo que se han llevado una muy buena impresión de la ciudad.

Hoy me he levantado con mucha energía después de descansar como una bestia y me he puesto en la cocina. El resultado final han sido dos estupendas tortillas de patata (que todavía no hemos probado) aunque debo reconocer que he tenido que utilizar el comodín de la llamada para consultar a mi madre. Y es que cuando me pongo… Ahora solo falta esperar la critica de los comensales que estoy seguro de que va a ser muy positiva. De lo contrario no lo publicare en el blog...

Por cierto, en la última entrada se me olvido comentar que me he comprado unos billetes de tren para ir a Londres en Noviembre. La verdad es que no me han salido nada caros, sobre 38 libras, ya que lo he cogido con dos meses de antelación. Voy el jueves 12 y me vuelvo el lunes 15 (el día de mi cumple). Allí me hospedare en casa de Javi que esta por allí currando y por lo que sé hasta ahora no le va nada mal! Estoy seguro que me lo voy a pasar pipa ese fin de semana.

Bueno, creo que esto es todo lo que ha dado de si esta semana. Ahora creo que debería ponerme a hacer los deberes que esta tarde seguro que sale alguna cosa (el domingo pasado acabamos jugando al Twister y no acabe con el cuello partido de milagro).

ENGLISH VERSION

Hi there!

Today is October 10th, 2010 or what it’s the same 10/10/10… and Sunday as well, so I’m back with a new post for the blog.

I’m going to start by explaining to you that last Tuesday Anna, Kati, Michelle, Calum and me went to Canal Street to the Karaoke and the truth is that we really had fun. Luckily for all Manchester and especially for the weather, I didn’t sing… otherwise, it would still be raining, jejejeje Moreover, everyone who stood up on the stage sang really, really well and it would have been a terrible mistake for me.

The rest of the week I have been quite busy with the English course because my teacher usually gives us a lot of homework. Besides, I’ve started to read the book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas again and I’m also working hard with my English grammar book. Shortly, we are going to decide which one of us is going to take the CAE exam in December, and the truth is that I hope to be one of the candidates. At the moment, I believe that I’m on the average although in general the exam is not easy and you have to be extremely concentrated if you expect to pass it.

Yesterday, I had a surprise visit from Jordi, Néstor and Iñaki. Apparently they have been in the North for a while and they came around to Manchester. I took them to one of my favourite bars in the neighbourhood, Big Hands, where we drunk a couple of pints of San Miguel. After that, we went to the Curry Mile to have dinner (by the way, I’m still crying because of how spicy my chicken burger was). To be honest, it was a funny evening and I think they got a great impression of the city.

Today I woke up really powerful after sleeping like a baby last night and I decided to cook a Spanish omelette. The final result is, apparently, two good-looking omelettes (we haven’t tasted them yet) although I must recognize that I had to use the joker call to be assisted by my mum. Now I’m just waiting for the feedback from the guests that I’m sure it’s going to be positive… if not, I’m not going to tell you!

By the way, in the last post I forgot to explain to you that I’ve already bought the tickets to go to London in November. The truth is they weren’t expensive at all, around 38 pounds. The trick was to buy them with two months notice. Once I’ll arrive there, Javi (my friend from Madrid) is going to host me in his house. He is currently working in London and the last news says that he is doing really well. I think it’s going to be a great weekend!

Well, that’s all I’ve done during the last week. Now I think it’s time to start doing my homework because this evening some plan will probably come up (last Sunday we were playing Twister and I almost broke my neck, jajaja)
